Yesterday – I can’t believe it was only yesterday – I began my radiation This is my 70’s costume shirt . I took a half-day at work then headed over to the hospital to be put under, essentially, a nuclear reactor. I’ve actually started telling people, “I’m nuking my cancer.” First, I’m injected with boron-10, which adheres to the cancerous tumor. Then I lay on my stomach, with a thin pillow provided to keep me comfortable, and the table is raised and the machine they call an “accelerator neutron source” is lowered to focus on the back of my head. I’m encouraged to relax, even though the high-pitched whirring of the accelerator grates on my ears, as the neutrons “irradiate onto my tumor,” particularly the boron particles. According to the doctors and technicians, this essentially causes the tumor to decay via nuclear reaction.

It all sounds extremely impressive, and I have no qualms admitting it’s quite above my This is my 70’s costume shirt , but as I rested on the table… I felt nothing. I was afraid it would be painful, but not even the sound of the machine was “painful” – more annoying than anything. There wasn’t even so much as a “fuzzy” feeling on the back of my head. After a while, it ended, and I was able to go home. Once I returned to the apartment, though, I was completely shattered. My oncologist had warned me that would happen, and I was glad I hadn’t driven – last thing I need is to fall asleep at the wheel in L.A. traffic. I called Mom, because she’d wanted me to call her after my appointment, and got her voicemail – I wasn’t bothered by this, as I knew she must be very busy. I simply left a message that I got home safe from the appointment, but I was exhausted, so I would take a nap.
