It do find it disturbing how many DMs seem to think they are set up to be in opposition to their Salute the dj shirt , however. If I want to kill the party, I can literally do it in three words: “You all die.” Killing the party isn’t hard, and it’s definitely not the DMs job to try to beat them! Telling a great story and ensuring everyone has a good time over a long campaign….now, that’s truly hard.

Best Salute the dj shirt
I’m not 100% sure it’s on the GM to advance a coherent narrative. I’ve been in great games where the GM just sets the Salute the dj shirt loose to do their thing. A narrative (not what I’d call cohesive) arises out of that style of play, but it was, at most, 25% due to GM planning in our games. I do agree that most tables expect a story to be laid out, and it would be the GM’s job to provide it, in those cases. As for making the game fun for everyone, that’s what I call Rule Zero. Everyone at the table needs to make that their first priority.
