Upon revisit, this is probably the closest of the bad records to a 5/10, but it has some stuff holding it back. The production of the record is my least favorite of the entire year. Gabby has a tremendous voice, it doesn’t need to be hidden by a ridiculous amount of auto tune and stop trying to make her sound like Carrie Underwood or a 2000’s R&B star. Goldmine while it sounds like a Carrie track, is pretty good. Jesus & My Mama is a blast, Got Me is arguably my favorite, it is the most vocally distinct, and lets the vocals breath. And the production is overall pretty solid. This record overall just feels like a ripoff of Reputation, a record I actually enjoy. So the comparison brings it down a lot more.

This feels like the Last Jedi of albums, certified critics praise the album saying it’s a subversive Grateful Dead Hockey Minglewood shirt , meanwhile casual listeners online tend to trash it. I think it’s a little bit of both. On one hand you get master crafts of songs. The Daughters & Sugar Coat are songs that have stayed with me the entire year. On the other you have songs like WBW which keep me up at night, and make me question if it’s even worth listening to music ever again. 1/3 of this record is top tier for the entire year, meanwhile the remaining 2/3 is either boring at best or terrible at it’s worst. And you are left with a record that has little to no cohesion. The production style is interesting to say the least. It’s decent, but nothing as unique or profound as Golden Hour, which clearly this album copied. I just wish the 2/3’s of this was as good as the fantastic 1/3.
