He dropped out of school in third grade to go into the mines, and ended up organizing with the union, red bandana around his neck and all. He eventually lost his leg at the hip due to infection brought about by faulty equipment, and died of black lung.When he became a foreman, he fought for equal pay for the black miners, and raised his own children as anti-racist as he knew how to be. How he brought up my grandmother has had a lasting impact on my entire family. I named my son after him.
