Every part of the bannana tree is useable in cooking. My mom used to make curry out of the I Just Want To Work In My Garden And Hang Out With my chickens shirt and roots, and a lot of indian people use banana leaves as plates as well. Then of course there’s the fruitI grew up in the south of Australia, where bananas aren’t so common. We’d use paper plates for BBQ. But then I moved north and had a garden full of banana plants; The leaves are amazing and versatile, no more paper plates. My cook-out rocked!I was probably 11 or 12 when I first heard this from new neighbor kids, who were a bit younger. Every single time when we got around to ooples oon bununus I would snort-giggle, then laaaaaaugh and laugh. It got to the point I would start laughing in anticipation well before we got to u and couldn’t even sing that part.I have no idea why it hit me so funny, just the silliness of the sounds I guess. It’s the last time I recall having such a pure response to something, not tainted by meanness or personal insecurity.Middle school was waiting right around the corner, but my little brother and I will always have ooples oon bununus.

I dated a Cambodian girl for a few years and she’d make these delicious I Just Want To Work In My Garden And Hang Out With my chickens shirt . Basically logs of rice with pork belly in the center, steamed in a banana leaf wrapping. We don’t speak anymore, but I damn sure do mosey on down to the Buddhist temple a couple towns over during lunar new year and stock up on these delicious things because there’s usually somebody selling them there. They freeze wellThats part of my childhood. Grew up in Hanoi for 6 years and every new jear (not western one) wed make it. Now im living in the Netherlands and it takes effort te get banana leaves. Bang chung is somethinb you need to grow up with to LOVEMy first trip to Indonesia and every trip that I take end with some crazy stupid story of me eating something I shouldn’t. So my first time me and these two local woman, one I was dating and one was a mutual friend, we were eating seafood nasi goreng (seafood friend rice) and it was wrapped in a banana leaf. Dumb me thought sweet, like a tortilla, it’s meant to be eaten, I wrap it and take a massive bite and I realize real quick I fucked up with a mix of worried faces of those two and several people nearby watching this bule chewing on a banana leaf taco, still chewing with a disgusted face they tell me to spit it out and tell me it’s not meant to be eaten. So I spit it out and unfold my taco and laugh it off and finish my meal. Lesson 1 on street food is, banana leaves taste horrible and only meant as a caring plate.
